[Review] Jollibee at Scarborough, Ontario

Went there after they opened the store for about one month. Heard about this fast food chain since last year and all I heard was how good it is. So, ever since then I eager to try them when I have a chance. The chance was coming after all but I had to wait for a good whole month to get to proof  all the hype I heard.

Actually, I went there when they already opened for one week, but the line was 2 full tents of people. Nah, I won’t wait for food for that long, even if it’s for free. That time, the waiting time was estimated up to 4 hours. No, thanks!

So I went there couple days ago, when I was parking my car I didn’t see any form of line, at least one tent that I passed was empty. I was full of hope and little that I knew, there was a line in another tent, I thought even though there would be a line, it won’t that long and they must learn through the whole month experiences to fasten the line. I walked to the tent with my daughter and there was almost half tent full of people. They gave me a Q card number and little information about quantity and amount of money I could spend (Max $50 and 2 bucket of chicken). Sweet, So I won’t going crazy inside to grab everything, haha kidding.

For half tent of people we had to wait for about 45 minutes, everybody look excited, old and young, men and women, adult and kids, every single one (except maybe for my daughter) patiently waiting their time, to exchange their money to a piece of chicken, spagetti or palabo.

So here my review :

Service ***** 5 stars (employees are friendly, full of smile, I feel welcome )

Place **** 4 stars  (new and clean but not big enough, there is only 2 cashier machines)

Food ***** 5 stars (for the taste compare to other retail fast food and for their varians of food and drink, they have steamed RICE!)

Price ****  4 stars (reasonable but expect to spend more than you normally spend on fast food chain because of all food you want to try)

Overall, This place will earn my return. If I was happen in the area near meal time, I would pop in if the line is not so crazy long.

They are going to open another Jolibee in Mississauga (same building with the Seafood City/Hearthland) sometime July this year.

Combo B (6 pcs of chicken, 1 spaghetti family size, 3 pcs peach mango pie) $30-ish

They want you to be jolly… Jollibee’s mascot

World needs more Jolibee for sure, haha.

Love Power Dalam Sepotong Tempe

If you tell me ten years ago that I will make Tempe by myself, I will look into your eyes, smile, poke your forehead with my index finger and say “Are you crazy? What on earth that you think I am ABLE to make homemade Tempe OR in what occasion that I NEED to make Tempe?!”

And here we are… June,  two thousand seventeen!!! I made my very first homemade Tempe! *tap my own shoulder* (you should see my face when I open my oven door to check the Tempe after 2 days, I believe my face glowing and my eyes almost pop out).

So Yutan, YOU are able to make Tempe now, what is the occasion that in 2017 you decided to make Tempe? What’s the urgency? You just challenging yourself or what?

Well, see the title above? All because of love. The mother love that breaks all the barriers. My daughter, Olivia who is 3 years old, love eating Tempe. Recently she is so picky about food. And Tempe is one of very limited foods that she willing to eat, happily, without any drama or left over.

Of course I can go to some Asian grocery stores for the Tempe but frozen Tempe in those stores are not fresh and don’t taste good in my opinion. In Toronto we do have fresh (by order) Tempe that taste good, very good in fact. But, it so far away from my place. So, I left no choice but have to be able to make one by myself.

I learned how to make it through some YouTube videos, including how to make the Tempe starter (ragi). I am so impressed by the end result and so grateful for those people who share the recipes online so people like me can make it.

The hardest process was to remove the soy bean’s skin. No easy or fastest way except if you have the machine. Believe me, I went through so many YouTube videos and websites and I decided to stop searching and start to peeling the skin 🙂

Lesson learned from this achievement is we are able to do almost anything beyond our comfort zone. We just need some purposes or motivations. If we can get some support, that would be even better.

I still cannot believe I made Tempe! Are you kidding me? Tempe? In Canada? In 2017? Haha.

[Review] Qi Sushi – Japaness Restaurant

When we finished our work at Downtown area yesterday afternoon, we took advantage to try some new restaurant nearby. Thanks for Yelp application who gave us some alternative. We chose this Japanese restaurant called Qi Sushi.

It was Sunday afternoon so the road wasn’t crowded and we easily found a street side parking lot. I didn’t have any special expectation rather than to fill my stomach, fresh Sushi dipping it with soya sauce and wasabi probably only the thing that what I expect.

When we entered the restaurant, inside was pretty small and compact. It pretty closed between one tables to another. So expect to hear some chit chat from people across your table, vice versa.

You can sit where ever you like and one lady immediately over us the menu and cold drink. It was brown rice tea, I’ve to admitted, it was the best brown rice tea I’ve ever tasted, and I like the flavour which is probably a bit too strong for some people.

Before we entered the restaurant, I got a chance to glare at the small board outside the restaurant promoted a special lunch of Bulgogi Beef Bento for only $6. What an offer. So, since Hadi ordered a plate of Combo Sushi, I decided to choose a Bento Box so we could have more variety foods to try.

When I mentioned about the Bulgogi, the lady told us that the offer only for Take-Out. It was $10 if you Dine-In. I canceled my order and ask for some minutes. I thought if the price is regular price then I want to look at to the menu one more time, probably there is another menu that tempting me more. Too bad the lady seemed disappointed with this cheap customer, she said in between when I wasn’t finish my sentence “It’s only $10″. I got what she means, If I stick with my first choice, it’s only $4 different and after all it’s only $10 portion of food that consider cheap for downtown restaurant. Errhh, somebody could convince me that $4 is not matter in term of eating in the restaurant in Toronto, please?

Anyway, I just a bit shocked for what she said but no hard feeling at all. I think I get used to it? I just think she was rude but that’s not enough to make us cancel the entire order and walk out. I ordered Chicken Teriyaki, instead.

The food took some minutes to arrive. A bit longer than what it supposed to. Base on there is no other customer place an order before us. But the waiting time was still tolerable because they served Miso Soup for Bento Box order and small bowl of noodle soup for every customer. The Miso Soup was ok with obvious chunk of mushroom which is good. I just didn’t impress with the noodle, a bit weird for my liking.

Instagram Video I took that day!

When the order finally came out. I was surprised; the portion of Sushi Combo was huge. It was 3 kinds of Sushi (Salmon, Tuna and Tempura) whit 8 pcs each for only $12. The rice around the Sushi was so thin and the filling was so generous. It tasted creamy and fresh. At other Japanese restaurant I guess with the same portion it will at least cost us $16.

They also delivered a good job on Their Bento Box. I’ve never impressed with any Bento veggies which is usually there as a bed for whatever Bento Meat/Fish we choose. We ended up finish all the veggies include their very fresh Japanese salad style. The Chicken Teriyaki also good, the meat was soft and well-seasoned. With the price $10 as a Lunch Special (Yes, Their Lunch Special include Weekend as well) it’s a good deal, since we could finish all of foods in the box because they’re so good.

Defitenely will come back to try another menu or when the Sushi Fever attacks us in the future. The Dinner price is more expensive with the same menu on Lunch Time.
